Hi! My name is Kavita Persad and I’m currently pursuing the MEd Reading programme at UWI. This programme is providing me with the necessary skills I need to become a Reading Specialist. I'll provide an explanation of what a reading specialists does in my next blog.
I am required to set up this blog for a course I'm currently pursuing: ICT for reading. It's quite an exciting course thus far as I am learning about technology I can use with my students to make learning more meaningful and exciting!
For the past ten years I taught English Language and English Literature at the secondary school level.My first experience teaching was at a boy's secondary school, where the majority of my students were remedial students. I did not have the formal training to help these students and did'nt know what to do to help then to read.
At present I work at an all girls' secondary school in Chaguanas, Trinidad. I like to read and cannot understand why my students don't like to read. It is a task getting them to read their literature text books and they often express their dislike of reading. However I will not give up...
I love teaching and always try to improve my teaching methods so that my students will enjoy learning. My goal is to assist my students to become better readers and most of all to simply enjoy reading!
